Ass. #1 Icebreaker speech

This is a speech written for my first assignment in Toastmasters Club.  Though I am not able to finish the whole speech since i only have 4 to 6 minutes but I believe I've done my best in this assignment.  Next time, for other assignments i will do my best to keep it shorter.

P/S: the highlighted area is the ones not mention.

I still want to post this speech just for sharing.

Very good evening to fellow toastmasters and guests, I’m honored to be given this chance to stand here tonight to enhance my skill in public speaking.  This golden opportunity may not always come floating by in front of us many times.  (make hay while the sun shines) That is why I made the decision to grab it before it floats away.  Standing here tonight takes up lots of courage.

My name is Elizabeth Wee, my close friends calls me Beth Beth.

After finishing high school, I started working in the educational field then continue my studies in Curtin University as a Mass communication student.  My parents always tells me, its never too late to change and improve yourself because it is always better late then never.  Of course if you can do it early is the best.

However, I have to go through a little trial, that is to show that I really wanted to continue my studies and will make the best out of it.  I’ve been telling my parents again and again I wanted to study and all they would reply is “show me your sincerity and seriousness towards it.  No matter what I said and change the answer is still the same.  I almost give up on persuading them.  To me, I thinking giving up on something is more difficult than to continue it.  So I went to the University myself to get a form ask for the price and get the procedure done.  That same day, I went home and show the school fees and inform them that I had already enrolled myself in.  My parents looked at me and smiled, this is what we have been waiting for.  I was left in confusion, I felt so puzzled and still did not understand what they actually wanted.  Finally my parents just told me one thing, actions speak louder than words.

Rome was not built in one day

My parents had brought me up to today is not an easy task, they had sacrifice so much for me and my siblings up to today and had never asked for anything in return.  Only hoping that we will become a useful person.  They’ve spent so much love for us to be here today. No matter how naughty we can be at times, they had never given up on us.  I remember there was once me and my brother played with blanco, when my mom came back from work and saw us she was in grave shock.  Imagine what we have done with it.  We actually covered each other’s hair with it thinking that we are hairdressers and making our own trend.  Guess what, my mom is the one that became our hairdresser, because she helped us cut our hair especially the ones that got blancoed.  My parents had been sending me to courses to build me up and finally today I am standing here giving my first speech in toastmasters about myself.  Ladies and gentlemen, I assure you, my Rome is still not fully built yet.

I always remember what our parents been teaching us.  There are only the four of you, always be close and help each other.  Whenever we quarreled, mother will always be the bad guy, we will be scolded and asked to stop.  However, my dad, he would tell mom “let them quarrel and fight once in a while, it will be good for them”. In the end, they will always remind us that we have to stick together no matter what happen or how bad the conflict had bring our relationship to because blood is thicker than water.

I’m a writer in mind but somehow my heart can never meet my mind.  I only write when inspiration comes and believe it or not, it only comes once in a blue moon.  I write lots of things especially in these few years because I need to do my school assignments, that’s why I wrote more now.  However, for your reading pleasure you may log on towww.wluckysam.blogspot.com to access into my writings.  Another thing that I like to do as a hobby is, I love to talk but I can also be as quiet as a mouse at times.  My father always says I’m a very talkative person, that is because I would bug him in the middle of the night and tell him my stories and joke around.  He will normally answer me with umm.. ahh.. and most of a time with a snore.  This does not stop me from talking so I just continue until I myself said good night.  So joining toastmaster is a good way to enhance my talking hobby because practice makes perfect.
